Executive Summary – After the 9/11 incident the USA started what they refer to as a no-fly list. This is a list that the government checks every flyer against. If the passenger is on the list they are not allowed to fly on the commercial plane.
The TSA, part of the Homeland Security Department, maintains the No fly list containing hundreds of thousands of people listed by name. Many politicians, activists, and even small pre-school children have turned up on the list. The people on the list are supposed to present a risk of air piracy or terrorism. The list started out as an International list only for flights originating outside the USA flying into the USA.
Expanding the No Fly List – The first measure they took was to use this no fly list for people departing the USA. This in effect was similar to an exit visa. One had to get a clearance from the government to leave the country.
More Expansion of the Use of the No Fly List – Next, they applied the list to flights going from one state in the USA to another. The people need to show an approved driver license or a passport to fly from one state to another. Now this had an effect very similar to requiring an internal passport so movements within the country could be tracked.
More Expansion of the Use of the No Fly List Again – Now, if a flight originating in say Europe going to Mexico passes over USA airspace the no fly list must be applied. The test for whether or not the flight is in USA airspace is if the aircraft crew has to communicate with a USA flight controller. The USA airspace includes the airspace over the oceans near the USA, not sure what near is anymore. The commercial airline must present its passenger list 60 minutes before flight departure to the TSA of the USA for approval if it is flying over USA airspace. If a passenger is on the no fly list then they must be removed from the flight before take off. If the flight takes off and does not check with the TSA it will be turned away and rerouted somewhere as a punishment. If one passenger slips through the cracks and it is picked up while the plane is in route, the whole flight gets turned away and rerouted even if they are not landing in the USA. So the USA is applying its no fly list to international flights of non-Americans who have no intention of ever stepping foot in the USA.
Flight Crews of USA or Foreign Airlines – If a flight crew member is flying over USA airspace then they need to get a B Class Commercial Visa from the USA even though they never ever will step foot in the USA for their whole life.
Private Planes Now Included – The TSA of the USA applies the no fly list to private aircraft as well. If you owned your own private plane your pilot would need to submit your name to the TSA before the plane was allowed to fly within the USA crossing state lines, leaving the USA or entering the USA or flying over the airspace of the USA. If the person who owns the plane were the pilot then they would need to submit themselves. We doubt a person could hold a pilot license from the USA if he was on the no fly list but have we no hard data for this.
Where is this Headed – The idea would be to find a way to apply this list to all the flights anywhere in the world. Of course some governments would never agree to this. At some point the “other” governments may get the idea of creating their own no fly list as a means towards “reciprocity”. This could bring this nonsense to a screeching halt. The vast majority of the people in the world do not read this website and thus have no idea this is going on. The no fly list will probably be expanded to those who have done some socially incorrect things in the eyes of the government. They might target people not paying child support who now have their driver licenses and passports take away in the USA, people owing back taxes, people with unpaid civil court judgments, and anyone else they decide to put on the list. Expatriating can be hard if you are on the no fly list. One would have to cross the border to Mexico and there board a flight not passing over USA airspace to another country. We assume that any American owned or based airline or charter Aircraft Company based in the USA checks every passengers name against the no fly list even if the flight is not going near the USA.
What You Can Do – Well first of all let me say if you live anywhere in the world and believe that this is going to make the world a safer place for you then do nothing and enjoy the “Friendly Skies of the TSA”. If you think it will help contact your elected officials in your country and yell at them to end this violation of your civil rights. State there is no judicial oversight to the process of adding one to the list and a lack of checks and balances. Numerous mistakes have been made in the past causing much pain and suffering. Of course you can always vote with your feet and depart from any country that cooperates with such an insane violation of civil rights. Go get another citizenship and passport with a sealed in court records name change and thus maintain your privacy and security. Of course you can just avoid any air travel and hope they do not institute a no drive list at all the state border crossings where you have to scan your driver license or passport to pass over state lines.
