Fall of the American Empire – Surviving the Collapse Dec. 12, 2010

Setting the Stage – The Economy – The banks are failing. 151 failed banks as of Dec. 10, 2010. The FDIC which is a private corporation can go bankrupt or Congress may fund it again. Forty two million people on foodstamps. Extended unemployment benefits are shut and may or may not be extended again leaving millions with zero income for about one month now. Home prices are down. Many owe more than their homes are worth. Foreclosures are way up there. About 80 million people are now without a general purpose credit card (think Visa). Credit card delinquency rates are still high. For the physical year ending Sept. 2010 bankruptcy filing were over 1.5 million up 13% form the previous year. Please bear in mind many people cannot afford to go bankrupt. Business bankruptcies for this period were over 58,000. People are homeless and tent cities are popping up all over the USA. Soup kitchens are busy. Home heating oil is now $3.83 a gallon up from $2.90 a year ago. Many are worried about not being able to heat their homes this winter. Last year a gallon of auto fuel was $2.85 and is now $3.27 (average). This can be troubling for those needing to commute. There is federal heating assistance money available but may run out if congress does not extend it. $670 million was released on Dec 11, 2010 bringing the nationwide made available to $2.7 billion since October first under the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program. You need to make under $49,000 to qualify. So they run up heating oil prices and then use taxpayer funds to get people to buy the oil who may otherwise not be able to pay for the oil. Smell a rat? There are about 2.7 million people in prison. Eighty percent of them for victimless crimes which can be referred to as political crimes. These prisoners need food and medical care. The governments cannot afford to retain the police and corrections officers and they are getting laid off all over the nation. Firefighters are also getting laid off. Doom and gloom. Hospitals and emergency rooms are closing all over the US. The Treasury is trying to print more money as a means to fix things. Never worked yet. The federal reserve is buying the treasury bills. A joke in itself. Demand for dollars is dropping. Other countries are trying to weaken their currencies to fight against USA exports which means less jobs for the USA. Food prices are rising. Manufacturers of food products are passing on rising prices of ingredients to the consumers. Rising fuel costs also lead to rising food prices. Gold is approaching $1500 an ounce and silver $30 an ounce. People have no confidence in any of the currencies used around the world. Not one currency is secured by precious metals. Taxing agencies of all sorts are going after anyone with assets with a vengeance. Small and medium size businesses are closing due to harassment by taxing authorities and regulators seeking to extract money from these businesses to keep their jobs. Sooner or later this source of revenue runs out. Some police in fear of losing their jobs are handing out traffic tickets in the $300 to $800 range. Things are very bad.

Civil Unrest in Europe – The EU is having more than its fair share of riots, strikes and protests. The people are not content. The bankers are getting the blame. The government keeps bailing them out and making the people suffer for it. The EU people are somewhat more socialistic than those in the USA. They are angered over increased retirement age and costs of a college education going up drastically. There are strikes, demonstrations lasting days at a time. The governments can do nothing because they are married to a failing systems. One is democracy which always ends with the have nots voting for the haves to give them their money. The second is the fiat money systems where the currency is based on nothing but the full faith and credit of a bunch of lying two faced politicians. The EU people have been mostly disarmed by their lovely governments so they are in a tight spot and pretty much have to suck up what their leaders stuff down their throats.

Foreign Affairs – Wikileaks is taking its continued toll on the USA. Obama is not nearly the leader needed to counter such a scandal. Obama has failed with his Muslim agenda in the middle east and has walked away from any peace talk negotiations in favor of the basketball courts while Michelle takes her entourage on international diplomatic shopping trips at tax payer expense. The USA has apparently begun to surround China with more missiles. They have over 300 in Taiwan. They are fortifying Guam. Now they are provoking North Korea using South Korea as a puppet to do so. If they can escalate a conflict then they can eventually invade North Korea. Of course they will let North Korea create some serious damage in the region first to get support for the move. When the smoke clears they will have more missiles on the border with China in North Korea to get China into compliance with US economic policies. A dangerous game at best. Put has had it with Obama. He is making a mockery of the USA with the wikileaks cables. Putin understands the USA clearly. Chavez is announcing Iran sponsored missile bases. Apparently the idea is for Chavez to have nukes when Iran gets them. Venezuela might be able to deliver nuke missiles to the USA fairly quickly compared to Iran. This is not good for people living in the USA. Obama and his monetary policies are being taken as a joke. The USA has lost most of its credibility internationally. It seems like many are waiting for the collapse.

What to Do – Money – It seems inevitable that the US will fail economically in the fairly immediate future. Hyper-inflation will be the end. This is what happens when you keep printing money and refuse to behave responsibly. To fix the economy the country would have to shut down the federal reserve banks. Refuse to pay these private bankers their illegal tax free interest thus reducing the debt load. A new currency would need to be created that is backed by something. This would wreck the financial markets (NYSE, American Stock Exchange, Chicago Board of Trade, NY Futures Exchange, NASDAQ). The market makers in these exchanges need to be able to borrow significant sums from the federal reserve bank to cover price advances and their short sales. Without the fiat money supply operating these markets would be difficult to impossible. So you need to have precious metals. Banks may be closed for days at a time and frequently. Electronic transactions may be suspended. Keep a supply of gold and silver. Minted coins is best. Try to get coins small in size. The older USA coins made from silver are a good choice. Get a secure safe to keep them in. Hide the real safe and leave a cheap easy to find safe around for a decoy with some nominal amount of money in it. Since the banks are paying such poor interest consider doing without a US bank. Keep money in an offshore bank avoiding the USD and Euro. Safe deposit boxes are not secure. The contents can be attached. If banks fail they can be looted by bank employees. Do not count on credit card and checks. You can be in for a rude awakening.

Barter – When the egg hits the fan expect there to be shortages of everything. Once the shelves are bare in the stores it may be some time until they get replenished. Ever see what the shelves look like before a hurricane. Got it. Load up on any prescription medicines you need. Load up on over the counter medicines like tylenol, allergy pills, antacids and other things you might be in the habit of using. You should learn about herbs and supplements and stock up on them too. A hundred cans of tuna, sardines, soups, meats etc is going to be worth a lot. Things like tampons, deodorants, matches, makeup is also going to have barter value. Think about 100 lbs of spaghetti. Do get a good water filter in that the cities may go bust and stop filtering water. Keep a supply of water on hand. Solar cookers and heaters is a good idea. There are plastic bags that can heat water in the sun that are used for warm showers. Think of what people will need and want and buy a lot of it. This will enable you to trade for what you forgot to get. It could easily be 90 days until order is restored.

Communication – Cable, internet, radio may be out. Shortwave radios can be great for communications. Books may be in short supply. Electricity outages can be a problem for computers. Hand crank radios are a good idea, especially shortwave.

Martial Law – Expect the fed to try this soon. Exactly how, where, when and how we do not know. Be ready for this. If they give up control they can face prosecution for their crimes and this is a big deterrent preventing them from acting in the best interests of the people. Do consider Obama is especially incapable of handling anything like civil unrest. This is man with little education, experience or ability to lead. Expect Obama to suspend Congress. He will probably limit severely the power of cities, counties and states as well. This will cause more backlash and intensify the chaos and problems.

Expatriating – One choice always on the table is leaving. For this we favor Latin America. They have a 12 month growing season. Food is overall plentiful and cheap. Life can be cheap in Latin America. There are many countries and they are all somewhat different. Most of these nations are not affected by the economic downturn which predominantly is affecting the EU and North America.

Think This Hard to Believe – Ok you tell us how Obama is going to get us out of the economic mess we are in avoiding hyper-inflation. We are listening.
