As the financial crisis worsens in the USA more and more retailers are closing. This is because the people have less and less disposable income to spend only being able to afford necessities. These closing result in job losses now and of course these job losses result in more job losses throwing the nation into an ever descending vortex unless it is somehow broken. Over spending caused the spiral and of course the Obama plan to spend the country out of it is absurd.
Ritz Camera - Closing 300 nationwide retail
Costco - Closing 2 stores
Gottschalks - Selling retail chain and filing bankruptcy
Pier 1 Imports - Closing 80 stores
Starbucks - closing 600 stores
Ann Taylor - closing 163 stores up from 117
Macy’s - closing 11 stores
Sears – 24 more retail locations, 28 in 2008
Home Depot – closing all 34 of its Expo Design Centers
Zale’s – 115 stores
Circuit City – agreement with liquidators to sell the remaining stores
American Greetings – closing 60 stores
Ruby Tuesday – closing 70 corporate owned locations
Sportsman’s Warehouse – activities in 29 states, closing 23 store and selling another 15
Bulgari – closing an undetermined number of stores
Tiffany & Co is closing Iridesse - pearl jewelry chain in 16 locations
Fortunoff – closed it’s doors talks of liquidating of inventory in place
Phillips-Van Heusen – Parent company of Calvin Klein, Izod, and Van Heusen clothing brands closing 175 and reducing its warehouse capacity, etc
Yankee Candle – will close 28 retail stores (Illuminations) and one Yankee Candle store
Virgin Megastore – all in the US are closing
Supervalu’s Cub Foods – 50 grocery stores (Cub, Foods, Albertson’s, Shop ‘n Save, Shaw’s Star, & others).
Goody’s Family Clothing – recently emerged from bankruptcy protection announced it’s filing for chapter 11 and liquidating its remaining 282 stores
Sweetbay Supermarkets - closing 7 locations
World Market – closing 26 stores
Oneida – closing 20 outlets
S & K Famous Brands – Liquidating 30 stores
Famous Footwear – 30-35 closings
Claire’s – closing 119 locations
Kira Platinina – closing all 12 US stores
Whole Foods & Wild Oats – 13 stores in an FTC settlement
Bealls – 12 outlet stores
Gap, Inc – closing 100
Canadian Sam’s Club Stores – closing all Canadian locations - 1,200 jobs
Bassett Furniture – closing 8 to 10 stores
