What is a Pensionado Program – This is a program where you can obtain a lifetime permanent residency in Guatemala if you are a retired person with at least $1000 a month income. This enables you to remain and live in the granting nation for your entire life. In just 2 short years you are eligible to apply for citizenship. This is not a Panama Pensionado, it has markedly more advantages than that program.
What is Your Status – You will be a permanent resident.
Banking - You can open bank accounts in the country with just your permanent resident ID card. No need to show your home country passport to open a bank account.
Driver License – Yes you are eligible for a driver license.
Gun Permits – You can buy pistols, rifles and shotguns. You can get a license to carry pistols concealed.
Cross Border Travel – You will be able to travel across land borders to other Central American Nations without using your home country passport. Some clients refer to this as off the grid living.
Passports – As a pensionado you are not entitled to a passport. However after living in the country for three years you are eligible to apply for citizenship. Once your citizenship is granted you can get a passport the next day. The passport is good for visa free travel to the entire EU, Central and South America, Parts of Asia, Caribbean, Africa, Russia, Ukraine, etc.
Income Requirements – You need to be able to show a retirement income of $1000 a month. This can be documented in a number of ways, inquire. There is no age requirement. Young people are on disability and can qualify. You could set up a self retirement income program and show bank deposits.
Family Members – You can bring in a married spouse and children under 18. The government may ask for you to have extra income if there is a large family. This is discretionary.
Importing Personal Goods – You are able to import two cars with a nice reduction in importation duty. Please don't ask us to calculate the reduction. It is a complicated formula based on sale price of the car with normal taxes in the country combined with price reductions based on age. It is car specific. It is a complicated procedure that only the government black box can calculate accurately but suffice it to say that it is a nice discount. There are no other importation discounts on other personal property.
Permission to Work – The pensionado has no permission to work for others. You could work for yourself or open a business through a corporation.
Documents Required – We need a current passport for you and all family members. All family members must come physically to the country. You also have to present paperwork showing proof of the monthly income of at least $1000 a month.
Time Frame – You need to come to the country for 7-10 days and you will then leave as a pensionado with all your documentation.
Cost – The cost is $7500 for the primary applicant, a married couple is $9500. The country does not recognize unmarried spouses, common law spouses, significant others or same sex spouses.
