Panama Exotic Pet Legal Guide

Panama Exotic Pets – Panama has a Wide assortment of exotic pets however many of them are illegal to own, sell or transfer. We will discuss some of them here.

Panama Tropical Fish – The fish stores are full of exotic fish. Some of them are caught locally and some imported. You can find lion fish, sharks, eels, octopus and many types of beautiful tropical fish. Generally if you buy these from a reputable pet store there are no legal issues.

Panama Spiders, Tarantulas – There are lot of them available and some are fairly large.

Panama Tigrillo - This is a Panama wild jungle cat like a small ocelot. It is a Marguay in actuality. While maybe only 10 kilos one of these could cause a lot of human damage if it got mad at you. This may be a really poor choice in a pet. It will stalk your dogs, cats, birds and fish. While beautiful they are also illegal endangered pets so avoid this one. If you go looking for one you will find it but it can lead to real legal problems. There is a larger version of this jungle cat in Panama. This would mean the cat is more dangerous and just as illegal. I have never seen hybrid wild cats being offered in Panama and do not know how they would be treated by the authorities, someday I suppose we will find out. Do visit the Panama City Zoo to see wild cats up close.

Panama Mono Titi - This is a very small monkey indigenous to Panama. They have jet black faces and hands. They weigh in at about 2 kilos or less. They are cute, affectionate, wear diapers, bond with the entire family, get along with other pets and are very endangered and this could lead to law enforcement issues. If you look for one you will find it but it is best avoided as a pet for legal reasons. The zoo has some very cute examples.

Panama Amazon Parrots – There are numerous Parrots in Panama. The Yellow Head is the one best known for talking. They are loud birds and can be prone to biting. They sometimes only bond with one member of the family and reject the others, think biting. They can easily draw blood with their beaks. The other popular bird is the Conure called Arratanga. It is smaller than the Yellow Head Parrot and bonds with the entire family with fewer tendencies to be a problem biter. The Macaw is also in Panama. These guys can be real loud and can bite seriously hard, be careful since they regularly in pet shops. The Toucan is also found in Panama. There are other exotic birds imported into Panama sold in the pet stores. These birds are sold legally and illegally. The established pet stores will only sell you a lawful pet.

Panama Predatory Birds – Panama has hawks and eagles. Panama is home to the world’s largest eagle, the Harpy. Panama City has some Harpy eagles in the zoo and that is a nice way to see them. They are massive (6-8 foot wingspan) and only a nut would want one as a pet. These birds could probably take out a 30 kilo dog. Predatory birds make poor pets. They do not like to be touched or handled. Most are endangered and illegal to own.

Panama Snakes and Lizards – Panama pet stores have a full house assortment of these. I have seen Pythons in pet stores that seem large enough to threaten a child if not an adult. If the pet stores are selling them they will be lawful pets but could still be dangerous.

Panama Dogs- Just about any breed you want you can find in Panama. No doggie scoops and bags needed when walking the dog. No controls on Pit Bulls or other breeds.

Panama Cats – A generous assortment of household felines are available.

Panama Ferrets – These are commonly found in the pet shops.

Panama Rabbits – Often seen in pet stores.

Panama Hamsters, Gerbils – Commonly found in pet stores.

Panama Poison Dart Frogs – These brightly colored frogs are common in Panama but best left alone in the rain forest where they thrive. If deprived of their wild jungle diet they no longer make poison and thus their body is not functioning as intended.

Others – I am sure we left something out. Panama is a pet owner’s haven.
