Offshore Expat Forums

Introduction – On the Internet there have in the last few years emerged numerous forums, groups and chat rooms for people thinking of moving to another country, generally a tax haven or a retirement haven. Many people interested in asset protection and retirement offshore go to these forums to seek out information, free advice, friends and contacts. We will discuss these things based on our experiences as a Panama Law Firm.

Forum Friends – It is good to line up friends but be on your guard. A lot of these people go to groups and forums to do undercover marketing. They befriend you, gain your trust and then when you are their friend and trust them they can position themselves to get you into a deal or refer you to someone who is a professional (lawyer, accountant, stock broker, realtor, insurance broker, investment manager, general contractor, painter, furniture seller, appliance seller) that is less than ethical and will kick back money to the referring party which means inflated prices to you. When you are in Latin America, Asia and other points far from home this is an accepted way of doing business.

Learn the language and conduct your own business dealings in the best advice. If the language skills are not something you are good at or the language is a real hard one hire yourself a personal assistant who is bi-lingual. This will help you settle in and set up your house, business and life in general. Sit down and have a chat with the person when interviewing them and explain that if they are going to get kickbacks you will fire them. The whole purpose of hiring them is to save money from the merchants and professionals who will gringo price you if you do not have local representation. The locals will have a tendency to think that they are supposed to hit you with gringo prices or there is something wrong with them. Have them sign a written contract specifically prohibiting them from taking kickbacks stating that the kickbacks if taken would belong to you and that it is your property and you have a right to recover it. Get a local lawyer to prepare it. Insert a clause about legal fees and court costs. The lawyer should be able to make it legal. Remember you are most likely trying to use a broken or poorly functioning legal system to modify a way of life to suit your needs. Not an easy task but workable to varying degrees.

If nothing else you might minimize the kickbacks and get your prices lower. Do take the time to double check the prices from time to time so your assistant doesn’t think you let your guard down. In some cultures being overly nice to the worker will be construed as being soft and can open the door for being taken advantage of. The mindset is likely different than back home. The sooner you stop thinking like you did back home the faster your adjustment to the new country will be.

Forum Advice – Never believe any legal advice you read in any forum, chat or group. I read lots of false and erroneous information in these groups and forums. Never rely on the professionals who post there. They are marketing and looking for clients. Never ever go there for real estate. You will wind up paying gringo prices. The forums and groups are good for information about living in the country: how to get a phone, where to buy groceries, what a maid earns, what the weather is like, the political climate etc.

Forum Know it Alls – You will encounter these types. They lived in the country for 15 years. They speak the language, know the culture, legal system etc. First question to ask yourself is why are they on the forum to start with. If two or three years have gone by and you still have not gotten rooted in yet, maybe you should look for another country. In some countries they say it takes 8 years to get good with the language. Not all of us have eight years for this. These ole salty dog types generally had very little useful information about much in their own country and it is the same way in the new country. They should have outgrown the forums and groups. People are mostly asking the same things every day – immigration, residency, offshore banking, phone, Internet, language, maids, real estate, cars, air travel, offshore taxes, crime etc. These old salty dogs want to show off, they like to use the local slang words in their writings to show how knowledgeable they are, and probably befriend you and you may then find out the hard way they make a living preying off of people like you that are new to the country.

After a number of years they should be rooted in, have their own life, friends, income stream etc. They are a bad fit for a forum catering to newcomers. After you are rooted into a country it becomes boring and tedious to meet newcomers and go through it all again with how to get this and that done. People welcoming this generally have an ulterior motive.

Start Your Own Forum – Feel the need to talk to others about the country in question, then start your own forum or group. If you learn the systems you will see how to promote the forum using other forums and groups, which is basically how it is usually done, although not considered ethical it is usually how it is done. Read up on these things and go out and enjoy yourself. Don’t be intimidated by the existing forum owners, start your own.
