Introduction – Here we go again more job cuts. Plants are closing and jobs being lost in wholesale quantities. We are hearing reports from the USA that your people are enlisting in the armed forces to be able to feed their families. These people do this knowing that they might wind up in combat in Iraq or Afghanistan. That is how bad it is getting.
We believe the worst will not be until the second quarter this year. Many of the retailers closed down around mid January giving them a chance to participate in the Christmas sales and then they stay open a few weeks into January to handle the returns and exchanges before shutting down to avoid credit card charge backs. This month so far the USA has announced 150,000 job cuts. Jobless claims hit 589,000 this week.
Who is Laying Off in the USA
Pfizer – 19,000 jobs. People do not have money to buy medicines and fewer and fewer people have health insurance.
Sprint Nextel – 8,000. People are not able to pay for their cell phones.
Home Depot – 7,000. People are not improving their homes.
Texas Instruments – 1800 jobs eliminated. People buying less business equipment.
Circuit City – Closing USA stores, jobs lost total 30,000. People are not buying new computers, TV’s etc. They a re keeping what they have longer.
General Motors – Shutting down some shifts and 2,000 jobs lost. People aren’t buying new cars but keeping what they have longer.
Who is Laying Off in the EU
Royal Phillips Electronics NV – 6,000 jobs lost in first quarter of 2009. Consumer electronics sales down since people are keeping what they have longer and repairing things.
Corus – 800 jobs lost. This is a steel maker and low auto sales can be behind this layoff.
Barnes group Inc – 800 jobs lost. Aerospace manufacturer.
Lincoln National Corp – 540 jobs lost. Life insurer. People can’t afford to pay for life insurance.
Brooks Automation – 350 jobs lost. They a re tied to the microchip industry and demand for electronics is down.
Altus Pharmaceuticals – Cutting 75% of its workers. People cannot afford drugs.
IBM – They cut 1400 sales jobs. Who is going to buy business equipment in this market?
Discussion – The layoffs lead to more layoffs. When people lose their job they cut back spending. This causes other industries to suffer and then more layoffs and closures of businesses result. Obama is trying to stop the job loss and business closures with printing more money and creating programs to get things moving. This works in the short run. It will eventually cause a drop in the USD. This will lead to hyperinflation. This will cause problems significantly worse than what they have now.
The EU is suffering because they were tied too close to the USA and now they a re suffering. The USA is going to try to keep its dollar as high as it can hoping to stall or escape the decline, which leads to hyperinflation. The looming fear is civil unrest as in riots, out of control crime etc in the country. The tax revenue for the USA and EU is going to be way down due to closed businesses and out of work people. Central America is doing fine as is a lot of (but not all) South America. The relations between this region and the Bush Administration were so awful that the ties to the USA were greatly diminished and thus many of these nations are doing fine and the effects of the economic collapse are not noticed at all. If you want a place to come to think Central America.
Remember when the unemployment insurance runs out in a few months’ people will be volatile, especially in the USA. They will not be able to buy gas, food, healthcare, cable TV, Internet, phones, electricity etc. Then all it takes is a spark and you are going to have civil unrest. Feel free to call us for any questions regarding relocation to Central America.
