Tourist Visa – Those of you from North America and most European Countries can get a 90-day tourist visa at the Guatemala airport with your passport. This visa can be renewed one time for another 90 days. At this time you can leave the country briefly and return getting another 90 days and start all over again.
The other option is to become a resident. Guatemala certainly allows one a most generous period of time to decide whether or not they would like to become a resident. You can also own a home in Guatemala living there some months every year (probably the colder months your home country has) and then return to your home country all possible lawfully with tourist status only. You will find that doing business in Guatemala even the everyday things like phone service, utilities, banking etc. is easier if you are a resident. Since Guatemala does not tax offshore income there should be no negative effects on you financially from becoming a resident or citizen.
Temporary Residence – These are one-year residencies that can be renewed.
Permanent Resident – These run for five years and they can be renewed.
Pensionado – This is a lifetime residence that is granted to those that are retired. One must show they receive a pension or investment income of $1000 a month. For each dependent brought in under the program (spouse or minor child under 18) there is an additional $200 required. You can qualify from investment income or a private pension, which is not the case in Panama.
General Residency Requirements – One must have a passport with at least six months remaining. There are simple and easy to qualify for financial requirements that must be met. One would need an official copy of a marriage license, birth certificate, and a police report from the country lived in for the last two years. This is an overview of the general requirements. If you become a client we will assist you in building a complete immigration application. Upon acceptance of your application you can remain in the country until the application is approved. You are also free to come and go.
Citizen – If you are a permanent resident for three years you can become a Guatemala citizen. This in turn qualifies you to get a Guatemala passport which allows for visa free travel to many countries including most of the EU, Japan and Central and South America; see list of countries at end of the page.
Fees – Please Inquire.
Fast Track Programs – There are fast track programs available to greatly shorten the time periods required to become a resident, citizen and get a passport. Please inquire.
