Businesses That Will Prosper During the Financial Crisis

Internet Service Providers – As people are out of work and sit home they will be using the Internet more and more. This is a cheap and easy from of entertainment.

Internet Dating Sites – Singles invariably frequent Internet dating sites more in bad financial times.

Fast Food – People will eat out and resort to cheap food. Fast food meals can equal the cost of eating at home. One can sometimes eat cheaper in a fast food restaurant. People tend to forget the unhealthy ingredients in bad economic times.

Auto Repair – People will put off buying new cars. They will resort to repairing their existing cars.

Used Clothing Stores – Yes the second time around shops will do well. People will be offering their spare clothes for cash, and others will be looking to buy second time around clothes, which are cheaper than new clothes and can serve the same purpose.

Liquor Business – Sales will go up in bad times. People will buy cheaper products. Profit margins may be acceptable but dollar volume will drop off sharply.

Health Clubs – People can kill a lot of time and work off stress. A cheap outlet for entertainment.

Private Security – Those with things to protect will use more and more private security. Crime increases in bad times.

Movie Theatres – People like an escape when times are bad. The movies are an affordable escape.

Home Improvement Centers – People will be fixing up their own houses more.

Appliance Repair Centers – They will thrive as people fix things rather than replace them.

Alternative Health Care – More and more people will be without healthcare insurance. Alternative health care is cheaper and does work. When the USSR broke up and things got bad the alternative health care business boomed.

Businesses That Will Fail During the Financial Crisis

Car Dealers – People will defer buying new cars. People with bad credit will be unable to finance cars.

Airlines – People will not travel as much as they used to.

Cruise Lines – People will not take vacations as much as they used to. Cruise Lines borrow to acquire the ships. This means debt service and with reduced revenues that equals bankruptcy. If the ships do not sell out the first step is to drop prices and hope they make it up on drinks, tours and gambling. This reduces revenues. If they park ships due to a lack of passengers it is the kiss of death for them. They need to keep the cruises moving. Some ships will wind up being sold to smaller cruise lines in other countries. They will take the boat in at a reduced capital cost so the debt service will be less.

Resort Parks – The large amusement parks themed and otherwise will suffer. Some of them have expansive grounds and large hotels. Their overhead will choke them due to reduced park attendance. Some of these parks draw from people living far away so these vacations are costly. Those folks actually taking vacations will stay close to home to avoid expensive airfares.

Stock Brokers – People will be trading less. Many have already been wiped out. Brokers will be laid off and offices will close.

Banks – Many more will fail. Banks will close, jobs will be lost.

Malls – The anchor client retailers are closing in massive quantities. This will cause shopping mall closures. The regional malls will probably get hit the hardest.

Credit Card Companies – They will be getting hit very hard with the increase in the unemployed who have debts they cannot pay. Bankruptcies will rise more and more wiping out their profits.

Lawyers – This will take time but corporations and private individuals will be cutting down on their legal expenditures. Big law firms will be letting some lawyers go and hiring others like bankruptcy lawyers. Some of the big law firms will survive, others will fold, merge, reorganize etc. The large firms who survive will have clients that survive. Those with clients closing down operations will themselves probably closing down.

Hospitals – As the financial crisis expands the amount of people without health care insurance will increase. Private pay patients cannot support the overhead of a hospital. Insurance companies are paying claims slow like 90 days or more. Things will be bad for hospitals and some will fail, others may reduce services.

Clothing Manufacturers – They will suffer and many will fail. New clothing sales will be down. People will defer these purchases until better times.

Electronic Appliance Companies – Sales of computers, alliances, TV’s Stereos will suffer. People will defer making these purchases.
