Germany – In Berlin 700 rioters were throwing petrol bombs (Molotov cocktails) and poring flammable liquids on the police trying to contain the riots. There were 237 injured police, fourteen had serious wounds. Two hundred and eighty nine demonstrators were taken into custody. The rioters were throwing slabs of concrete at the police in riot gear. The 5800 deployed riot police used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse the rioters. People are not happy about the government and the banks messing up the economy and then having to rely on the same geniuses to fix the problem their incompetence and greed caused. Seems like the cat is getting out of the bag. The German union leaders estimate that 480,000 people participated in 400 rallies around Germany to protest what has happened. I guess the German people are not stupid enough to buy the tax haven scapegoat theory the German police are trying to get the people to buy into along with the other G20 nations.
Greece – Protestors got proactive and attacked banks and traffic cameras. What the people don’t like traffic cameras? Shocking. The Greek police had to use flash grenades to disperse them. The protestors did manage to disrupt buses, trains, ferries and air service. The protestors were protesting the bailing out of the banks.
Istanbul – One in three young people are without work in Turkey. Protestors were throwing Molotov cocktails and stones. The riot police were using water cannons, tear gas, pepper spray, and firing guns to disperse the rioters. The rioters were smashing banks and some shops. Eleven police were wounded. Sixty-eight demonstrators were detained.
France – The French workers staged a big march in Paris, big, 1.2 million people marched in 283 demonstrations.
Russia – Suffering from declining oil prices, bank closures, 7 million unemployed and an economy that shrank nearly 10% in the fist quarter of 2009 was of course motivating demonstrations. The protests were relatively tame without violence but their point was made. There were people detained is all.
Italy – The unions were marching in protest. It was peaceful.
Japan – In Tokyo 36,000 people rallied demanding more social benefits and a reduction in military spending.
Discussion – The pot is starting to boil over. Police are getting hurt. Molotov cocktails are starting to be used. A Molotov cocktail is basically a glass wine bottle filled with a mixture of gasoline and laundry detergent. A gas soaked rag is stuffed into the wine bottle opening and lit as a fuse. The bottle with the lit fuse is then thrown at the target. The glass breaks spreading the homemade napalm which is burning on the target which can be a vehicle, a group of persons, a building etc. These devices are highly effective in causing damage and personal injury. Special riot vehicles and tanks are designed to resist them with closed air supply and are fireproof with a sealed environment.
Of course there is a limit to their fire resistance and if they were to be hit with five or ten Molotov cocktail I expect their resistance would start to wear away and the inhabitants would need to drive rapidly to a safe location where they could exit the vehicle leaving it for the fire department to control the flames. Bullet resistant cars work for a certain number of rounds only, Shoot one of these cars in the same window or body panel enough times and it will eventually break down and let bullets through. Same with flame proof riot vehicles. The Molotov cocktail was used in the Hungarian revolution in the 1950’s against tanks and military vehicles with great success. Ordinary police cars, motorcycles and regular buildings are easily destroyed by these easy to build destructive devices that are virtually untraceable.
The government can’t eliminate sales of gas, wine in bottle or laundry detergent. Equipping police with flameproof suits is foolish. With this would need to be an air supply and full covering for the head and hands. Shooting weapons would be difficult at best, vision would be obstructed, they would be hot and uncomfortable and it would expose the officers to different threats like being knocked over and trampled by the rioters. It looks like the people in Europe are going to be communicating clearly to the government in a way the governments will understand.
Implications for the USA – The USA government is scared that this will happen in USA. Problem for the USA government is that there are more guns than people in the USA with enough ammo to outfit all the major armies of the world combined. Remember things keep getting worse and worse. More business failures, more unemployed, more bankrupt, more homeless, more people without healthcare, more people in jail, more civil rights taken away, more emergency rooms closing, more hospitals closing, and in general doom and gloom.
There is a point where the getting worse and worse will reach a trigger point and the USA will have riots and protests that get ugly. I can see no logical reason why this will not happen. Only a question of when. Obama has not even come close to slowing done the economic downturn. If he knew what he was doing he would at least affect a slowdown, instead it is accelerating. Acceleration breeds more acceleration. People lose confidence and become afraid to spend money. This causes more unemployment. Unemployment always causes more unemployment. This causes more business failures, more foreclosures, more homelessness and eventually the trigger point is reached and then come the riots. Riots lead to looting, rape, murder, home invasion, car jacking, robbery etc.
It is suggested to move yourself and assets out of the USA and sit this one out. If it ever bounces back you can always return and if not well the ones that get out first get out with the most.
