Introduction – Several economies around the world are facing collapse. Some have collapsed already. Now we are talking civil unrest big time, way beyond job loss and banking failures. A financial crisis is a good trigger for such an event. Here are some tips as to what will be in demand if it goes into civil unrest for an extended period of time. Remember once the banks close, barter will be the required medium for transactions. Checks and credit cards will be worthless. Paper money will have little to zero value.
Before we get started let’s get this out of the way. If there are shortages of food, drinking water, medical supplies etc gold and silver may not be all that desirable. You cannot eat precious metals. They are only good if you can exchange them for food, medicine, drinking water etc. if the supply is limited or non-existent your gold is not worth much. Barter for hard goods will be the medium of exchange.
Ground Rules – First make sure you are near a good source of water. If this is not practical then get a good water filter. Some will allow you to safely pump through sewage and drink it. The filters should be easily cleaned. You can go a lot longer with no food than no water. Being near a well with a manual pump is nice. Your sink water will probably go early on. Filling bathtubs and plastic garbage cans with water will only work in the short run. If there is a lot of rain you can set up collectors for water. You will need drinking water. The cities will not have much of this. Water is not really transportable. Make sure you put drinking water supplies into your plans.
Canned Food – This can be more valuable than gold. Tuna, sardines, meats etc. Think in terms of hundreds of cans of this. Military ration packs are also a good source. Cans of tuna, and sardines can be used to barter for what you are in need of. A guy with 500 cans of tuna is well equipped to barter. Large amounts of canned foods are not so portable so bear this in mind. Decide if you want to set yourself up nomadically or dig in. You cannot do both. Make sure you can get water somehow before you decide to dig in.
Solar Powered Anything – Radios, flashlights, cooking grills etc. No need for power sources when there is no power. Anyway you can cook solar or heat water with solar is useful. Imagine warm bathing when there is no power. There are solar powered units for showers that campers use.
Simple Medicines – Aspirin, Tylenol, pep to bishop, capacitate, toms, topical disinfectants for wounds, bandages, antihistamines, cough syrups, pain medicines if you can get them like codeine and stronger, antibiotics if you can get them, burn medicines, ace bandages, band aids, etc.
Guns and Ammunition – Never can have too much of this. Ammunition should be stored in large quantities as it can be most useful for barter. Once the stores are looted bare that is it for ammo. In an extended breakdown bullets will become valuable if there is a breakdown that causes shooting to be widespread. Ammo goes fast. Guns without ammo are not worth much. Remember to defend your hoarding place.
Electrical Generators – This is not a great idea in that it is going to attract a lot of unwanted attention and requires large amounts of fuel to run. When the fuel is gone it is useless. At night people will hear it running for a long distance and it can invite trouble. Generators are good for short-term breakdowns only.
Sleeping Bags and Tents – If you are in a cold environment and the power is gone a cozy tent set up inside the house will be much warmer than the house itself. Nice sleeping bags are much appreciated.
Backpacks – These are great for excursions by foot.
Knives, Axes, Saws, Hand Tools – Great to have a nice supply on hand.
Candles – No electricity for lights.
Books – With power out and no TV, reading will come back for those that know how to read – warning limited market in USA <smile>. Paperback books especially novels will be in demand. Paperback books, which can be bought, used, almost for free will be valuable. People will have time on their hands. The books are a much-needed escape from their present circumstances.
Bicycles – No gas at the gas stations, then what, you peddle. It beats walking. You can also carry water home from the source easier using a bike.
Luxury Items – Soaps, shampoos, deodorants, after-shave, throw away razors, toothpaste, hair dye, fingernail polish and use your imagination. After a month without these items people will be craving them. How much space does 250 bottles of fingernail polish take up and what could it be worth around the sixth month of a breakdown?
Condiments – Ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, soy sauce, steak sauce, jelly, chewing gum, wine, booze, nuts, cigarettes, cigars, etc. People will crave these things after some time.
Summary – So instead of hoarding gold at $1000 an ounce for doomsday think cans of tuna fish and sardines. Once the stores are looted dry, tuna will cost about as much as gold. An investment opportunity for a poor man. In other nations where there was an extended breakdown of social order luxury items reigned supreme. People traded needed food for perfume, cologne, nice soap, toothpaste, makeup, fingernail polish etc. People are human. After they get their food and water they crave the luxury items. There will be a big difference between a two-week breakdown and a six-month breakdown and again a three-year breakdown.
