Introduction - Today one of the largest governments in the world has declared that people have no right to privacy with their email. This means it can be intercepted, read and used in courts, distributed, placed in the public domain at will without anything resembling a court order or probable cause. The user is thought to have no right to expect privacy. A lot of this stems from the Terms of Service various ISP’s use stating basically that your email is in the public domain. Think we are kidding, go read the terms of service from your ISP. The reality is that you have to deal with this to protect your privacy.
Email Encryption – This is the answer. Your email should be encrypted using an open source encryption program that has never been cracked. Open source is a term that means the entire software encryption program is available for examination. There are consumer groups who regularly do inspect such programs looking for backdoors and other compromises. One such a program that is good is PGP. But only the open source versions. Encryption stops your ISP from having a readable copy of the email. Remember only encrypted email can remain in your email account. Never rely on the encryption available from email providers like Yahoo. You have no idea who they give the algorithm to and they are not to be treated as a trustworthy source. Hushmail is a much better alternative. They have free accounts and have built in PGP encryption. They are in Canada and will cooperate with a court order from a Canada court but this is something that is not all that common in Canada. The few instances we heard of with Hushmail getting a court order concerned the cross border sale of drugs. If you wish to be seriously secured then just get a free email account somewhere and run your own encryption program bearing in mind that the people you are communicating with also need to be running the same encryption program. Hushmail makes things easier yet still relatively secure. Make sure you run Hushmail with the Java turned on; the accounts they got into did not have the Java on. With the Java on even a court order will not help since the folks at Hushmail themselves can not get into your email.
Skype – Skype is not secure. It uses encryption but we do not know whom Skype gives the encryption key to. They are owned by EBay so they are a less than credible company not to be trusted. The encryption does stop your ISP from reading your communications. It would not stop someone who has the ability to get the codes from Skype. Skype is a closed source program and we do not know about any possible backdoors they have put into it.
