Panama has a large number of Pharmacies. Many are large chains like Arrocha Farmacias, others are little independents. There is a limited amount of prescription drugs available in Panama compared to North America and Western Europe. Sometimes you need to get an equivalent drug but this is usually not a problem. Often you need to get a Spanish Generic that has the same active ingredient as what you are already using. The prices that the Panama Pharmacies charge is generally about 35% of the North American price. You often will not need a prescription for drugs you would need a prescription for in North America. The people in most countries could not afford to take off of work and go to the doctor every time they required a drug. The health care system would not work if this was required. Some of you are going to say well the health care system doesn’t work in my country come to think of it. Some drugs the pharmacist will not be prone to give you without a prescription such as antibiotics, strong sleeping pills, heavy narcotics and pain medicine. But you could get codeine over the counter and strong migraine medication. Things like blood pressure medication, liver medicine, allergy medicine, and so froth is not a problem obtaining without a prescription. If you are traveling and have a prescription and you run out the pharmacist may be inclined to give you a refill.
A big part of making the pharmacy system work for you is knowing what the name of the drug you need is in Spanish. Then you have to make sure your dose is correct, repeat make sure dose is correct. The pharmacist ahs a big book in Spanish that they can use to find you an equivalent drug so bring your empty vial in and let them look it up. You can also call your doctor in your home country to see if he can suggest drugs that do the same thing. Sometimes these may have equivalents available and even be cheaper. Generally it is not going to be a problem getting prescription medications, just a bit of a transition into the equivalent drug that is carried in Panama.
The Panama health care system run by the government has a lot of influence over what drugs are stocked in Panama. The smaller pharmacies can order in drugs for you from overseas. The hospital pharmacies also have a greater variety of drugs in stock. Once you adjust to the Panama system it is far easier and cheaper to use than what you are most likely used to and you don’t have to sit for hours in a doctor’s office waiting for refill prescriptions. What seems to compound the rising health care costs is the fact that you have to wait for hours to see a Doctor to get your prescription refilled. For many people this means losing money due to time off from work. You will also find the pharmacies are much faster than in your home country. It is easy to go in the middle of the day and get in and out in five or ten minutes. No taking a seat for 45 minutes until they get to your prescription.
