Introduction - many people come to visit our law firm in Panama and ask us about the driving. So here are the answers.
Panama Driving - it is a jungle out there, well in Panama City anyway. The street slack names, there are many one way streets, and there are no GPS systems available. The taxis are numerous and extremely aggressive. They do not hold their lanes. People go through stop signs on a roll. Buses will often run a red light. The good news is the traffic is so bad you seldom get a chance to go over 35 mph so things at low speed are not very dangerous. Surprisingly we see very few accidents and the ones we do see are typically just fender benders. We suggest you hire a driver and we can help with this if you are a client.
Panama Taxis – They are aggressive drivers. They often do not speak anything other than Spanish. Taxi fares in Panama City are by the zone. Rates are from $1 to $3 from any point in the city to any other point. We suggest just handing the driver $2.00 and smiling while you get out. If it is not enough eh will say something. Never ask him how much after you are in, he will probably say $5.00.
Panama Diablo Rojos –This means Red Devils and refers to the privately owned buses. These buses are old North American School Buses painted over often using red. They will have chromed wheels, rising chrome dual exhausts, pictures of the drivers kids on the side and rear, and at night they display fluorescent lights in various colors. These are the low riders of busdom. We never suggest our clients use these and never had anyone try. The locals use them. They drive very recklessly, very aggressively and will run red lights, cut people off, block traffic and anything else they can think of thus their name is what it is. As of late Panama has been doing away with the Diablo Rojos in wholesale quantities and replace them with more sedate normal looking modern buses. The newer buses seem to have better drivers and I suppose in a few more months the Diablo Rojos may only be a memory of times past in Panama. In a way we will all miss them but then again when one blocks traffic you can’t wait for them to be gone <smile>.
Getting Your Panama Drivers License – After you have some form of residency you can get a Panama Drivers License by presenting your home country drivers license which they will not keep. Licenses here are good for up to four years assuming you visa or residency is also good for that long. The license can only go out as far as your visa or residency. There is normally no road test and no written test, no eye test. Possibly a diabetes blood test to make sure you will not pass out while driving. Remember this is a different country than your home country so things are different here. Maybe not better and maybe not worse but different.
