Executive Summary – As reported by Reuters and CNN amongst other sources, when the terrorists entered the lobby of the hotel in Mumbai they began rounding up guests. They then asked for those that were American and British and singled them out to be used as hostages taking about 15 of them with them. One person when asked about his national origin said Italian and he was not used as a hostage.
Discussion – The USA and to a lesser extent the UK have a lot of enemies in the world. Enemies that mistakenly think the ordinary citizens of these countries have anything to do with foreign policy. The terrorists tend to single these people out for more aggressive action or to be used as hostages.
Summary – This is a very recent example of the usefulness of having a second or even a third passport from a country that is not controversial in foreign affairs. What would a second passport from a neutral country be worth to those unfortunate folks that were USA or British in the Mumbai Hotel?
