Executive Summary – Here we go. Now the government enforcers of the tax and customs laws are getting laid off to the tune of 3,400 jobs along with the closure of 90 offices. It is expected that up to a total of 25,000 jobs will be disappearing in the near future along with the closure of up to 200 offices.
Discussion – The very people that were collecting high taxes along with their attitude towards the people that pay their salaries who they are supposed to serve are now losing their jobs. Imagine going to look for a job in the private sector as an ex-tax collector. I think a hardened felon just released from prison might have a better chance of getting work from a small to medium size business than an ex tax collector. People in these jobs never seem to think they will have to hit the streets looking for work. Wrong. Maybe this will make people having these jobs think a little bit harder about the way they do their jobs in case they find themselves walking the streets looking for work, which is going to be the case in many countries very soon.
Analysis – The governments are going to realize that having a large and expensive tax collection effort in these trying times is not a solution. Those that are working are being hit hard already with real estate losses, stock market investments losses, pensions shrinking and a weakened currency diminishing their purchasing power. Aggressive tax collection will push these people into bankruptcy and even onto the public welfare system. The last thing a government wants is to convert taxpayers into tax consumers. In the old days when there was the original cold war, the government workers realized they worked for the people and treated them with dignity and respect. Perhaps these days will return again.
