Executive Summary – Mexico is the poster boy of gun control. They have extremely tight gun control laws. If a tourist crosses in Mexico with one bullet left in their trunk out of sight they can get several years in jail. The police are of course interested in searching tourists cars to see if they can find a .22 bullet left behind. You can figure out why. Well now their extreme crime wave has spread into a high tourist area, Acapulco. The tourist areas were fairly well left alone by the gangs in the past.
What Happened – The tourists were Mexicans. They were in Acapulco on a company function. Armed gunmen drove them away in four cars which were later abandoned. Acapulco has been the scene of increasing violence.
Drug Violence – Since 2006 28,000 people have been killed due to drug related violence. Mexico had 34 dead in 2 days this past week. Outrageous.
Mexican Mayors Ask US to Stop Deporting Criminals to Mexico – This is like out of a movie about the future but is true. Mexican Mayors have asked the USA to stop deporting convicted criminals back to Mexico. They say they return to Mexico and contribute to Mexican violence. Of course there was no mention of the fact that they were illegal aliens. They want the US to pay to keep them or give them papers or who knows what. They also neglect to say that these criminals serve time in US prisons for their crimes before being deported. This is as stupid as Calderon saying the US should crack down on gun sales near the Mexico border. My gosh these Mexican politicians are in a fog.

They say to exercise caution and to avoid the US Mexico border areas.
What UK says About Mexico Tourism – They are issuing warnings.
What the USA says About Mexico Tourism – They have a general warning.

The US State dept. forbids any of their employees from traveling by land across the US Mexico border, as of July 15, 2010. Their employees are forbidden from hailing Taxis in Mexico City. The border is basically a war zone.
Drug Violence – The US has a bad habit of never admitting they were wrong in the face of idiocy. They need to legalize all drugs in all quantities. If they do not they are responsible for all these senseless killings. The war of drugs is a failure. When they ended prohibition the crime stopped. The drug education programs have failed for decades. The people do not believe anything the government tells them anymore. The rehabilitation programs are somewhat successful but if the person returns to a drug infested environment they fail as well. Law enforcement efforts have failed miserably and with consistency for many decades. So the question would be what is the real reason why the US tenaciously clings to their drug laws? Draw your own conclusions.
Speculation – We think that if Calderon goes to full legalization of all drugs (cultivation, distribution, possession in any quantity) then Obama would go against amnesty of illegal aliens and could even start inspecting every car returning from Mexico. This has been done in recent years to push Mexico around. The land border crossing wait gets up to several hours for people entering the USA. This deters tourism and the trucks crossing the border get seriously delayed which costs money.
Calderon has decided to play the Americans game and his nation is in danger of falling into even greater strife if you can imagine this. Calderon predecessor Vicente Fox recently publicly called for full legalization as an end to the mayhem. Calderon has in the past opposed legalization but recently called for a debate. This means delay to us. Calderon talks nonsense like well we can't stop using the military in the war on drugs until the local governments build up their local police forces and eliminate the corruption. This statement is 99% nonsense and he knows it. Mexico has had corruption issues for over a century and they never eradicated this and who could believe with all the drug money on the table it would go away. Legalizing drugs is the only way.
If not the crime will keep escalating. Eventually the one million Americans plus perhaps another few hundred thousand folks from other countries will leave Mexico out of security concerns. Tourism will drop. As the gangs grow and prosper they will expand more and more into the tourist areas. Kidnapping and robbery of tourists will rise. Calderon can't possibly call for more gun control since he has hit the max so he calls for US gun control. Gun control the old scapegoat. Perhaps the Mexican people will have had enough of Calderon and his war on drugs and vote in someone who makes sense?
